Description of event/hazard:

A series of troughs over the Tasman Sea move eastwards across New Zealand today. A deepening low is forecast to cross the lower South Island overnight tonight and Wednesday morning.

Rain is expected in many South Island places with the heaviest falls in Westland, Buller and Southland and a Heavy Rain Warning is in place for these areas.

Area: Southland excluding Stewart Island
Valid: 16 hours from 6:00pm Tuesday to 10:00am Wednesday
Forecast: A period of heavy rain, with possible thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. Expect 50 to 70mm to accumulate. Peak intensities 15 to 25mm per hour, especially in thunderstorms.
