Description of event/hazard:

Significant heavy rain for Fiordland

A moist north to northwest flow spreads onto Fiordland Sunday afternoon ahead of an active front, which moves northwards over southern New Zealand during Tuesday. This front, preceded by strong or gale force northwesterly winds, will bring significant heavy rain to the west of the South Island including the Southern Alps.

People in southern and central New Zealand are advised to keep up to date with forecasts as Warnings and/or Watches will be issued for other regions as the event gets closer. Please see the Severe Weather Outlook for additional information on areas that may be affected.

Heavy Rain Warning
Heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.
Area: Fiordland
Valid: 46 hours from 3:00pm Sunday to 1:00pm Tuesday
Forecast: Expect 400 to 500mm of rain. Peak rates of 30 to 40mm per hour, especially in thunderstorms during Monday and Tuesday.
Changes: Upgraded to a full Warning and the time period extended to cover the entire heavy rain event.
