A deep low to the south of the country directs a strong westerly flow across the nation on Sunday. Gales are likely in many areas, possibly severe in exposed parts of the South Island and the lower North Island.

Valid: 8 hours from 6:00am to 2:00pm Sunday
Forecast: Severe gale northwesterlies, gusting 120 km/h. Winds are expected to turn westerly in the afternoon and ease slightly.
